One Speed, Two Speed, and Variable Speed Pumps. Oh My!

Thinking about getting a new pump for your swimming pool? You’re probably trying to figure out which kind of pump is going to fit what it is you’re looking for. Let’s take a look.

Basically, you’re going to have 3 options. You have your single speed pumps, your two speed pumps, and your variable speed pumps.

Single Speed Pumps
These are what most pools have used for quite some time. You flip them on and then their speed remains the same. They’re cheaper to buy than the others, but are very loud and aren’t all that efficient. Many have said that these are actually the priciest appliance that you can have. In certain areas these can cost someone as much as 2k a year just to have it run. Not really all that cheap after all, eh?

Two Speed Pumps
These are similar to the single speed, but just a bit different. The main difference is that the 2 speed has a lower speed option to it, which means that it is going to be a lot more efficient than just setting a pump to run at a higher speed nonstop.

The majority of people will run their 2 speeder on the lower setting the majority of the time, and then flip over to the higher setting when they run a heater, vacuum their swimming pool, or if they want to blow some fallen leaves over to the skimmers. These do work pretty well for a lot of people. They’re pricier than the single speed when it comes to the up front cost, but they’ll save you more money in the long run.

Variable Speed Pumps
Ah, now these are completely different from the above 2 pumps. These make use of a permanent magnet motor. This is the kind of motor that you’ll see in many electric cars, actually. You can set the flow rate that is needed for the swimming pool, which is just fantastic. You can keep that pool circulating at exactly the speed that it needs to be. These are the best energy saving pumps you can find.

These types of pumps also run much more silently than the above ones do, don’t run as hot, have a longer life span, can be controlled digitally, and even have better diagnostics. These can be as much as ninety percent more efficient than the one speeders. Some nice money being saved there once you have them. These are definitely the way to go when it comes to a new swimming pool pump.
