The use of a salt water system is becoming more and more popular as time moves on. This is due to their ease of use, among other reasons. Those other reasons include the fact that these systems produce their own chlorine, have softer water, and there is less need for worrying about chlorine issues.
They make use of electrolosys to do what they do. What that basically means is that the salt water goes through charged plates of a salt cell, and then the chlorine is split from the sodium and goes into the pool.
Here’s the issue, though. When you have high calcium levels in the pool, as we often do in Scottsdale and Phoenix, well it can cause some problems. Water will pass through the salt cell, and will calcify the electrode plates, which will make it so they aren’t working as they should. A fairly common sight with a salt water pool is white flaking at the bottom due to calcium build up.
There are ways of dealing with that, of course. We’ve covered that in the past and will continue to write more about how you can handle such issues. Still, its good to keep in mind that there are potential problems with any type of pool. The key is proper servicing and maintenance of the pool to ensure it remains in perfect working order.
