Lowering Your Pool’s Total Dissolved Solids

Anyone and everyone who owns a pool in Scottsdale, Phoenix, and pretty much all of Arizona should know at least the basic definition of total dissolved solids. Also referred to as TDS, it is essentially the full amount of various dissolved materials such as minerals, metals, and salts within any amount of water. That’s about as basic as a definition as I can give you. Typically when people talk about this topic it has to do with how pure your water is, and is an indicator of when you need to change your pool’s water.

Your pool can get TDS from things like leaves, pesticides, fertilizers, rocks, the air, and yes, water too. Water is actually the most common source. That is because water picks up a lot of this stuff based on where it is sourced from, and over time this can actually cause some issues with your pool’s tile, the pool surface, and the equipment for your swimming pool.

As any water evaporates, the minerals that were once in the water end up staying where they are, which can ruin a pool’s surface over time. It can also make your pool’s water chemistry much more challenging to keep in the proper levels, too. For most pools you want to swap out the water once every 2 years or so.

There are things like filtration that can be used instead of changing out the pool’s water, of course, but that depends on the equipment and professionals being used. It can be a good way of recycling water while still lowering the total dissolved solids for a swimming pool. Something to keep in mind when you call your pool professional.
