Salt Water Versus Chlorine-Based Pools

There are so many choices when it comes to the pool. Shape, size, style, vinyl versus concrete… the options are plenty. And there is actually there is even a choice when it comes to the water! And while it’s always nice to have options, it’s important to understand the pros and cons of each before making a decision. Aquaman Pools breaks down the differences between salt water and chlorine-based pools.

When most people think of salt water, they tend to think of the ocean’s briny water. Having a salt water pool won’t elicit waves or the tide of the coast (bummer!); rather it uses a chlorine generator that employs a brine that makes the chlorine for the pool.

When it comes down to the most basic difference between a salt water pool and a chlorine based pool, one has salt in the pool and the other doesn’t. Both, however, rely on chlorine to keep the pool water clean and disinfected.

For those that are debating a new pool and aren’t sure whether to go with a salt water base or chlorine base, the professionals at Aquaman Pools are happy to offer some advice. And of course, they are also well skilled and equipped to service and maintain a sparkling clean pool — whether salt water or chlorine based.

Salt water pools typically use less chlorine than a traditional chlorine-based pool, and the amount of salt is comparable to that in a person’s tears. For those with sensitive skin and eyes… or that want to preserve the life of their swim wear, salt water is less harsh on all of those than chlorine-based pools.

For those on a budget, a chlorine-based pool may be the better option. While it’s not a huge expense, a salt water pool generator is typically around $1,000. However, salt water based pools require less chlorine… so that initial cost may end up paying for itself over time. Because the salt water pool creates its own chlorine, the chemical expense is not an issue but a budget of about $20 per year will be required for salt.

Salt water pool upkeep also tends to be pricier because components need to be replaced a lot more frequently as the salt corrodes. Another point for a chlorine-based pool… those with plants surrounding the pool should be warned that salt water-based pools can absorb the nutrients in the dirt and soil surrounding it, damaging or kill plants. However, not having to deal with balancing the chlorine levels or even handling a corrosive chemical like chlorine is another plus for the salt water pool. For those that have a pool service, this issue becomes null so it’s all a matter of preference here.

When it comes down to it, there are pros and cons of each type of pool and it really comes down to what suits each individual pool owner best. For those that still need a little help making this decision, Aquaman Pools is just a phone call away and ready to assist!
