Swim for your Health

Those that have resolved to become healthier in the New Year, may want to take a dip into the world of swimming for fitness! Aquaman Pools shares some of the great benefits of swimming for health and fitness.

Swimming is a whole body workout and it covers both cardio and strength training in one session. An article on Shape.com states, “When you’re swimming, if you aren’t moving constantly, you’re sinking… making for a killer workout that keeps your heart rate elevated.” The article notes that because water is approximately 800 times denser than air, the body’s muscles “have to fight against constant resistance while you’re in the water.”

Swimming can also improve lung function. When swimming and the face is underwater, the body learns to utilize oxygen more efficiently — and ultimately takes in more fresh air with every breath and expels more carbon dioxide with every exhalation, according to Shape. The article states, “A study in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology even found that swimmers had better tidal volume (the amount of air that moves in and out of the lungs during relaxed breathing) compared to runners, one of the under-the-radar benefits of swimming. This results in lower resting heart rates, lower blood pressure, and… better running performance.”

Swimming is even credited for improved mental health! According to an article on Swimming.org, “Swimming has significantly reduced the symptoms of anxiety or depression for 1.4 million adults in Britain. Almost half a million British adults with mental health problems have stated that the number of visits to a medical professional regarding their mental health has reduced as a result of swimming.” The article adds that swimming and simply being in the water can also help with relaxation. Shape also adds that swimming can lower stress levels and improve sleep patterns.

Swimming has even been attributed to helping balance blood sugar. According to an article on Greatist.com, “A 2016 study found that high intensity swimming three times a week increased insulin sensitivity and balanced blood glucose. This can reduce your risk of diabetes. And if you have diabetes, swimming can help keep your blood sugar in check. The article goes on to say that swimming can even decrease risk of heart disease: “One study found that people with a regular swimming routine lost weight and had decreased carotid arterial stiffness, lower blood pressure, and increased blood flow to the brain. All these benefits reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Swimming is a great workout for all ages and skill levels; is low-impact and can ease joint pain, and of course, it’s a lot of fun! To boost health this year, make a splash! And for a sparkling clean and healthy pool, give the pool professionals at Aquaman Pools a call!
