Have you ever heard of the terms “Snowbelt” and “Sunbelt?” Did you know that these play a part in how we manage and maintain our swimming pools? Let’s take a look.
Life in the Sunbelt
There is a line (imaginary, of course) that splits up the United States into the Southern and Northern states. The ones in the South lie in the Sunbelt. Here in Scottsdale that includes us, and that means we don’t experience the same freezing temperatures as those in the North. It also means, though, that we tend to get longer summer heat and can experience some drought.
One of the great things about having a pool here in the Sunbelt is that our pools stay open much longer. Some people keep theirs open all year round. This is due to us not getting any of the extreme cold weather that those in the North have to deal with.
What we do get sometimes, though, is some drought. This means that special care needs to be taken to ensure that there is no damage done to the swimming pool’s finish, moving parts, and deck. Here are a few tips to help keep your pool in good shape when there is a drought going on:
- Keep the soil conditions all around your swimming pool as consistent as you possibly can. A swimming pool deck can shift and crack when there’s a drought going on. This is because of soil contraction, so its best to keep the soil as consistent as possible.
- Make sure that you water any grass near the pool during the night. Since its cooler at night this will help to prevent the soil from drying out through fast water evaporation.
- Since water evaporation happens very quickly during a drought, make sure that you keep the water level of your swimming pool down to the bottom of the drainage grate.
